LakeLens makes Minnesota fisheries survey data easier to use. Instead of opening lake-by-lake records and translating raw numbers on your own, you can build a practical shortlist, inspect the evidence behind it, and compare lakes for your trip.
What LakeLens is and why it exists
I created LakeLens as a tool to help me find new lakes to fish. I have always relied heavily on Minnesota DNR survey data, but I wanted a tool that would let me define the survey evidence I was looking for and show me only the lakes that fit those criteria. That is what LakeLens does: whether you are looking for water that could hold a trophy pike or want a day on water with a lot of fish, LakeLens helps find lakes that match your goals and distills the survey data into easy-to-read charts and rankings.
For each lake and species, LakeLens generates a LensScore: a 0–100 metric that considers abundance, size structure, survey recency, and consistency to support a consistent comparison between lakes. LakeLens also offers advanced CPUE and length filters for more specific trip targets.
Select your species
Choose one target fish for a focused recommendation, or select several for a mixed-species trip. Multi-species LensScore combines eligible survey evidence across selected species so you can compare multi-species lakes in one result. Fisheries filters for CPUE and length still work across multi-species selections, but because those metrics may not be directly comparable between species, results may skew toward a single species.
Discover new lakes
Start with a LakeLens recommendation when you want a balanced view of abundance and size structure. Use the Fisheries controls to deliberately look for higher action, bigger upper-end fish, a longest surveyed fish, recency, or another supported survey metric.
Each ranking answers a different question. A high-action lake and a larger-fish lake can both be good choices—just for different days on the water.
Tailor your trip
Lake Profile and Access and Amenities help narrow a fisheries shortlist by reported lake size, depth, public-access context, canoe fit, motor context, camping proximity, depth-map availability, and stocking history where supported.
Trip-fit signals are planning context, not fisheries score components. They may be incomplete and are drawn from public state and national-forest data; private campgrounds are not included.
Understand a recommendation
A LensScore is LakeLens’s 0–100 summary of how strong and dependable a lake’s documented Minnesota DNR fishing evidence is for a selected species. It uses full survey history, fish size, abundance, recency, sample support, and repeatability while accounting for comparable survey methods. Missing evidence remains unknown rather than being treated as zero. LensScore describes historical survey strength—not a guarantee of future catches, current fish populations, or regulatory conditions.
Size structure uses cumulative tiers
Quality, Preferred, Memorable, and Trophy are species-specific size thresholds used to describe the surveyed length distribution. The tiers are cumulative: a Trophy-size fish also counts toward the lower tiers. They are not legal harvest or keeper rules—always check current regulations.
Abundance and size structure are separate signals. A lake can show high catch-rate evidence without large-fish evidence, or strong upper-end size evidence without frequent action. Open a lake to see why its evidence stands out and what limitations remain.
LensScore is based purely on survey data. Survey methods, timing, and conditions can differ, so a lake’s survey record may not reflect the actual fishing experience.
Read the survey history
Lake detail preserves the survey timeline, method, catch rate, size summaries, reported comparison ranges, and raw DNR-derived rows. A survey is a sample—not a census—and one unusual survey should be read in context with the rest of the history.
Survey method matters. CPUE is catch per unit effort, so a number only makes sense within its species, gear, protocol, and time context. Raw CPUE from unlike protocols should not be compared as though the sampling effort were identical. LakeLens keeps method context visible and uses species-specific reference methods for its full-history recommendation model.
Compare and save lakes
Use Compare for two or three realistic candidates. The workspace keeps your current species and ranking context visible while showing score, abundance and size signals, recency, selected-species coverage, access, canoe fit, motor context, camping, and direct links to lake details. Use Saved for a longer personal shortlist stored only in this browser.
Understand limitations and data coverage
- Fisheries surveys are samples, not a census of every fish or every lake.
- LakeLens is not a current fishing forecast and does not include current weather or on-the-water conditions in its fisheries scores.
- Access, amenity, motor-context, canoe-fit, camping, depth-map, and stocking datasets can be incomplete; an unreported item is not verified absence.
- Regulations and safe access must be verified with the responsible authority before a trip.

LakeLens Score
A relative survey-evidence recommendation for the active ranking context. LensScore:
- Combines size-quality evidence—fish reaching Quality, Preferred, Memorable, and Trophy size tiers—with comparable abundance evidence.
- Gives size-quality evidence 80% of a survey opportunity score and reference-equivalent abundance 20%.
- Uses species-specific survey methods and effort adjustments so unlike protocols are not compared as if they were interchangeable.
- Weights evidence by survey recency, measured sample support, and supported effort.
- Rewards repeatable performance: a history supported by multiple strong surveys is more trustworthy than one exceptional survey.
LensScore / Multi-species LensScore
Full-history recommendation modes that summarize eligible species-specific abundance and size-quality evidence. LensScore is for one species; Multi-species LensScore combines eligible evidence across selected species.
Ranking and filter
A ranking orders lakes by one supported server-calculated evidence metric. A filter narrows the returned lakes without changing the meaning of a score.
Abundance and CPUE
Abundance is the survey signal for how frequently fish were encountered. CPUE means catch per unit effort: a reported catch rate within a specific survey method, protocol, species, and time context.
Reference CPUE and survey method
Reference CPUE is the species-specific method context LakeLens uses for comparable full-history abundance evidence. Different gear and protocols can catch fish differently, so raw CPUE values from unlike methods are not directly interchangeable.
Size structure
The distribution of measured fish lengths in a survey. It is more informative than one outlier when you want to understand how common larger fish were in the sample.
Quality-size fish
A measured fish at or above the active species-specific Quality threshold. It is a survey size tier, not a legal harvest designation.
Preferred-size fish
A measured fish at or above the active species-specific Preferred threshold. Preferred fish also count toward Quality when the lower threshold is met.
Memorable-size fish
A measured fish at or above the active species-specific Memorable threshold. It also satisfies lower cumulative tiers.
Trophy-size fish
A measured fish at or above the active species-specific Trophy threshold. It is evidence from a survey sample, not a guarantee a trophy fish is currently present.
Average length, maximum length, and P90
Average length summarizes the measured sample. Maximum length is the largest measured fish. P90, or 90th-percentile length, describes the upper end of the measured distribution—roughly the length exceeded by the largest tenth of sampled fish. LakeLens shows sample context when a direct size ranking depends on it.
Percentile
A relative position among comparable lake evidence. For example, a high percentile means the evidence is stronger than most comparable peer-lake evidence; it does not mean the same percentage chance of catching a fish.
Survey, survey year, and survey history
A survey is a dated DNR sampling event. Survey year identifies when it occurred. Survey history is the sequence of available events, used to separate repeatable evidence from a single observation.
Evidence strength, recency, and dependability
Evidence strength describes how much usable survey context is available. Recency describes how recently evidence was observed. Dependability describes how consistently supported evidence holds across survey history. Limited evidence is a limitation, not a zero score.
Multi-species search and insufficient evidence
A multi-species search combines only eligible species evidence. A partial match remains visible but names the selected species without enough evidence. Insufficient evidence means LakeLens cannot make the requested ranking claim for that species at that lake.
Public access, canoe fit, motor context, and mapped camping
Public access reflects joined reported DNR access records where available. Canoe fit is a separate planning estimate using available reported motor, lake-size, access, and canoe-area facts; missing components are disclosed. Motor context is planning information from available records, not legal advice. Mapped camping reports straight-line proximity only; it does not establish shoreline association, access, operation, or availability.
Stocking history
A source-derived history of reported DNR stocking events. It does not prove current stocking, current fish presence, or a current fishing outcome.
Technical methodology
Show technical methodology
LakeLens preserves measured and reported DNR evidence, then uses species-specific method interpretation, full-history recency weighting, repeatability safeguards, and explicit missing-evidence handling for its recommendation modes. A positive reported zero remains evidence; missing values are never converted to zero or an average.
The active LensScore model treats abundance and cumulative Quality / Preferred / Memorable / Trophy size structure as distinct evidence. It keeps trip-fit signals outside fisheries scoring, and it discloses method, evidence, and provenance limitations where available. Exact model weights, eligibility guardrails, and calibration decisions are maintained with the project’s scoring documentation and validation workflow.
